Headboards and Footboards

Headboards and Footboards

  • Admin S.C

Headboards and footboards can look gaudy and over the top for some, but they can serve functional purposes. Read on to find out more.

Headboards

While they are mostly for decoration purposes there are exceptions to this rule.

In the past for the rich and powerful they were status symbols made big and with rare materials that included gold and ivory. The fact that some of these still exist today speak volumes of amount of money spent on them. For the poor they would have to make their own out of whatever they can find or not have any at all; the purpose of which was to keep the cold from uninsulated walls and drafts from disturbing a good night's sleep.

Nowadays, headboards aren't as expensive (unless you want it to be) and are accessible to anyone. They can serve to enhance a bed's and bedroom's decor, look, and feel. They also can serve as storage for bits and pieces, keep your pillows from falling off mid-sleep, and can help you while you sit in bed doing various activities.

For those into Feng Shui a good headboard (one that is solid and made of wood) will act as a safe mountain behind you that you can lean on (psychologically) allowing you to get a restful night's sleep.

Footboards

Once exclusively used to stop your blankets from slipping away they, just like headboards, have developed to become more than what they were intended for.

As mentioned before, footboards in the past were for the sole purpose for your blankets to stay on you and your bed during the night. Now, footboards can be used for other purposes while also affecting the look and feel of the bed and bedroom. A variant of the footboard has a TV built into it for easy consumption of media while in bed. This eliminates the needs to make space for a TV in your bedroom, and when put away there would be few who would even suspect that you had a TV stowed away.

Feng Shui also plays a part with footboards. If your feet point to your bedroom door this position is called the 'Feet Out The Door' or the 'Death Position'. The latter term is from Chinese tradition that says that when someone dies in the house their bodies leave feet first out of the room to lead to the next. Footboards can also block the chi energy from the door coming to you and have it go around you.
